Grass planting - new house - red clay backyard

Hi all,

I'd like to plant some grass in the backyard of my townhouse - it's 28X16.

Can you tell me what I need?

I watched some videos that said 1/3 topsoil/sand/compost is what's needed. I figured about 1.5 yards each for my little lot.

Right now the contractors have thrown pine needles over the red clay.

Thanks from Charl0413181552_resized.jpg otte NC,

Look locally for sod & be done with it. Spreading, leveling & seeding such a small area is not worth it.

BTW, an area of 28' X 16' requires 4.1 cu. yards of dirt to attain a a depth of 3 inches (and that's before settling). I would go at least 6 inches if I was going to seed my own.

Thanks for the help.

Should I treat the red clay before applying the sod?

What's the hardiest sod?

thanks again

What's hardy here in Texas may not be the same as for your locale. Talk to the sod guy, he'd be better able to answer that question.
