The cold front swept through yesterday afternoon, triggering heavy thunderstorms in the evening & they continued most of the night. The stock tanks are now filled to their spillways & it will be cold here for the next 3 days. Total rain last night was 3.80".

Received the wine labels in the mail for the dewberry wine we made in the spring. Going to give a few bottles away at Christmas. The wine turned out absolutely fantastic, and I plan on doing a much larger batch next year.

I also plan on trying my luck at grapefruit wine as soon as the fruits are ready. The trees are loaded this year.

Potato pancakes / latkes for breakfast using a new All Clad non-stick skillet. We finished off 3 pounds of potatoes before 9 A.M.

Slow day at home after a little Christmas shopping this morning.

Sorry guys but nothing special here. I followed a YouTube video - Food Wishes Latkes. We like that You Tube chef's channel he does a great job and a few of his recipes are in our standard meal rotation. And I can count on his channel being kid friendly when we sit down to watch a video or three.

A few notes on the latkes though:
  • Found it worked best in a non-stick pan with a little oil. The recipe calls for about 1/4" deep of oil but that proved less than optimal.
  • I sliced the onion thinly rather than use the grater. I didn't want to cry that much.
  • 3 pounds of potatoes was a little much for 2 adults and 3 small kids.

22 F for a high.

Woke up at 2:40 A.M. to a kid saying he just threw up. This is getting ridiculous again.

Did 6 loads of laundry.

Ran vinegar through my coffee maker 5 times. There was probably enough calcium in that thing to make a mouse skeleton in my little 4 cup drip maker.

Pot of standard chicken bean kale noodle soup on the stove and skillet of corn bread just came out of the oven.

Fed the cattle.

Mrs. Ranch wanted to go furniture shopping... ordered new coffee/end tables & a matching TV stand for the guesthouse.

Dieter has a bad case of cabin fever due to the cold... When he's miserable, everyone is miserable.

Thick fog overnight. The fog didn't burn off but it condensed on all the trees and such and froze. As I drove to work it looked like everything was coated in spray frost like a post card or puzzle. Then the sun came up and it melted off.

I had water backing up behind my spillway last week after 4.5 rain.I suspected hogs had dug enough holes to block the flow once the pond had filled up.When I bought my place three years ago the owners had done nothing to the spillway and the water would run into the brush and eventually into the creek. It took me a week to hand dig a trench from the spillway to the creek[50 yards].I found that most of my trench had silted up plus millions of leaves had accumulated to prevent flow through the spillway. It is too wet to get any kind of equipment to reopen the spillway and trench so back to the shovel and hoe.At least we had great weather to spend all day reopening the spillway. It may be a 2 Advil night. Lol

It's only mid december and we're getting cabin fever already. It's going to be a long winter...
