Spent the day working on (almost finishing) several small progects that are between 3 and 11 years old.
  • Finished case molding around windows I replaced in 2015 - custom milled the moldings and had to make up depth in the sill because the new windows are thinner inside to outside than the old sashes.
  • Finished case molding around a door - required 8 feet of free hand cutting with a coping saw to follow the scribe line - the tile work that necessitated that was done 11 years ago.
  • Cut the shelves and supports on a bookcase that was started just before my daughter was born ... 8 years ago.
Movie night tonight after the crumb crunchers are in bed. The wife picked A Quite Place.

Received another 0.09" of rain last night.

Killed the fire ant mounds in the back yard that cropped up over night.

Cleaned/refilled the wasp traps.

Fed the cattle.

Seasoned up a thick sirloin that I'll smoke for supper tonight.

My red-twig dogwood is being defoliated by sawflies. I've hand picked hundreds of them over the last three days filling a 14 oz jar and about half a 32 oz yogurt container. Tonight I am trying a neem oil spray.

Dug part of a trench - call it part 1 of digging out the swale to fix the drainage problems in my yard - did about half the length then I ran out of containers to put the soil in to transport to the community garden bed. I need a pickup for some of these projects. I can't justify a pickup for my daily commute and don't have the place to keep a third car.

Harvested out my onion bed. The seed started onions did much better than the starts I bought.

Seeded three rows of beets and a row of cabbages where the onions were.

Determined that I need to thin out my popcorn. I hope I still have time to save some of it. The corn is only now pollinating.

Cleaned up the flowerbeds & started cleaning the garden.

Made 2 batches of buttermilk biscuits.

Trimmed up the hanging baskets on the back porch to keep the wind from whipping them around.

Watered all the trees, porch pots, hanging baskets, flowerbeds & asparagus. Yet another 100+ degrees today...

Fed the cattle.

Harvested 3 more watermelons, one for us & dropped the other two off at couple of our neighbors.

Made a last ditch attempt to save my popcorn crop this year - thinned it heavily. Lesson learned and next year I will place my rows farther apart. I think I will place them wide enough I can run a lawn mower down them, maybe mower deck + 4 inches.

Guys, do you think I am too late in thinning out the corn? Pollen tassels are starting to open and most of the silk is still red.

Did maintenance on the tomatoes - tied them up again and removed suckers. Harvested a bowl full of toms.

Taking it somewhat easy today as I tweaked my back yesterday.

I don't think you should have thinned it at all. I always planted mine 8-10" apart for maximum pollination. Corn pollen is very heavy & the wind will not carry very far.

Thanks @w_r_ranch

I have mine 6" apart plant spacing in rows 18" apart. Many of the stalks are twins - two seeds dropped and both grew.

Watered the flowerbeds, asparagus & all the trees. 'Hotter-Than-Hell' week has arrived here (our annual period of 100-110+ degree days). We look forward to it being over & 95 degrees actually feels cool.

Put out more hay for the cattle.

Shot a hog while I was having my morning coffee on the back porch. Lucky shot nowadays at 400 yards, LOL!!! The buzzards are eating well this morning. Update: I got a 2-fer, bullet passed through the first & got a second!!!

Pig_Down_400_Yards.jpg

Replaced the strainer basket in the laundry room sink. Then replaced the one in the kitchen sink... that was a pain & required 2 trips to town for drain pipe stuff.
