Yan, I've got them at about 5" this year. Normally, I go about 6" but I planted late this year so I'm expecting slightly smaller onions.

Took my Mother In Law out for her 90th birthday dinner. Been trying to get her to move in with us for 10 years now. No luck ! I finally took away ALL of her cooking apparatus in the her garage so she won't be forgetting anything on the stove. She hates me now ! LOL!!!

Talked to my mom in South Carolina. Today it was 23 F when she left the house. As she was driving out of the development / subdivision she learned some idiot didn't turn off the automatic sprinklers so several streets and common areas were ice rinks.

23 sounds nice. It was -12 F when I left this morning. According to the local radio hosts the wind was 4 mph out of the south so the windchill was -24 F. Sunday's forecast calls for a high of 33 F.

Talked to my mom again. They got something like a quarter inch of freezing rain which caused all the bridges between islands to be closed (they live on a barrier island along the intercoastal) so they're stuck on their island. Then the rain turned to snow and they got three inches.

-6 F when I went to work, 6 above when I drove home at 4 pm. Calling for a low around -10 tonight.

We have a big philodendron (tropical plant) in a bed near the patio. Last year it froze to heck. I didnt even bother covering it this year. The dang thing survived the freeze, can't believe it. I guess it learned a few tricks after last year.

Started cleaning up the yard.

Turned the irrigation system back on & watered all the trees, flowerbeds, garden, asparagus & stuff in the greenhouse. Thankfully there were no busted pipes/leaks.

Put out another suet block for the birds.

Finished the monthly chores.

60 deg F swing in a week for us according to the forecast. a Few days ago we were -15 F, now the forecast calls for 45 F on Wednesday.

Did everyone catch the news about an E Coli outbreak possibly tied to Romaine lettuce?

Just to let you know, the winds are suppose to 11-14 MPH... Don't let it get away from you.
Thanks Ranch.I'll watch the weather reports tonight and watch the wind in the morning.I was hoping to set them at daylight but will back off and see what the wind does.

-10 F this morning when we woke up. There's a trick where you can throw a cup of boiling water in the air when really cold out and it will fall to the ground as snow. I brought my pressure cooker up to pressure (just some water in it) then took it outside and removed the pressure weight. It failed. Just a giant stream of steam. But the kids thought it was great as they watched from the window. Then I found out that I was locked outside without a jacket and only wearing slippers on my feet.

Went to the local hydroponic store and the big box home stores - bought basic parts for a lettuce raft system. I started 2 spinach, 2 Parris Island lettuce (mom lives near Parris Island), 2 Grand Rapids lettuce (dad and brother live in Grand Rapids), 2 Rocket Arugula.

Sprayed 75 gallons of insecticide mix on the fire ant mounds in the yard & about 50' outside the yard fence. Time to get serious with them as they are requiring too much of my time... I don't care how deep they are at this time of year...

I used Malathion in the garden area, mixed at 2 ounces per gallon & then Talstar Pro (Bifenthrin) in & around the yard, mixed at 1 ounce per gallon.

I should mention that I 'pierce' the mounds (as deep as possible) with a piece of rebar & then use the sprayer wand to inject 1-2 gallons of the mixtures into the mound via the holes. The idea is to kill the queen(s).
